Parasol coffee table wins Red Dot design prize

Maze, together with Antrei Hartikainen and the Parasol coffee tables, wins the prestigious Red Dot Award in the 'Product Design' category. Since its inception in 1955, the Red Dot Award has identified and celebrated new and innovative design and is one of the world's most prestigious design competitions.

The 'Product Design' category highlights products with excellent design quality and is the oldest of the three categories included in the competition. The Red Dot jury consists of around 50 members from 23 different nationalities, who identify and recognize design excellence every year. "The Maze coffee tables Parasol impressed and stood out among thousands of entries with its ingenuity, functionality and aesthetic appeal." is part of the justification for the award according to the jury.

Together with Maze, the Parasol table series has been developed by the young and talented Finnish designer Antrei Hartikainen for Maze in 2023 and was premiered at the Stockholm Furniture Fair in February the same year. Antrei also won the 'Rising Star of the Year' award at the Scandinavian Design Awards during the fair. The series consists of two coffee tables, a larger one in size 90 cm in diameter and a smaller one in 50 cm in diameter. Both sizes come in natural coloured or dark stained oak veneer. Antrei got the inspiration for the aesthetic expression of the tables from water lilies in ponds, where the leaves float on the surface of the water. The balance between style and function makes the tables equally as suitable at home in a small apartment, as in the lounge of a fine hotel. Parasol follows the spirit of Scandinavian design - the industrial look meets a homely atmosphere and the shapes are minimalistic but refined.

"We are incredibly honored to receive the Red Dot Award for our Parasol tables. The award confirms our commitment to working with great designers to create unique furniture that stands the test of time. The win is an important milestone for Maze and motivates us to continue producing unique and innovative design solutions. The win would not have been possible without our fantastic collaboration with designer Antrei Hartikainen", says Lotta De Visscher, Creative Director at Maze.

The Red Dot Design Award is a prestigious international design award for good design, presented annually by the German Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen. The award ceremony takes place in Essen on June 24 and the Parasol tables will be part of the exhibition "Milestone in Contemporary Design" at the Red Dot Design Museum in Essen until May 2025.

About Antrei Hartikainen

Antrei Hartikainen is a master cabinetmaker and designer from Finland, known for his exquisite works in wood. He has studied woodworking through various degrees and started out as a carpenter, gradually over time becoming a self-taught designer. As a designer Antrei constantly explores the middle ground between functional objects and visual art.

“Through the years I have developed my own strong design idiom, which makes my work clear and distinctive. Sustainability, innovative use of material features, and beauty itself gives the frame for my designs. I often seek inspiration from landscapes shaped by nature and man, from the moments I observe in nature and everyday life, to the scales and details of architecture.” says Antrei. His choice of material is wood, and through honest decisions and thoughtful use of materials, Antrei wants to create long lasting pieces that we can live with for a long time without annual trends affecting the desire to exchange things for new items. Antrei have created the Parasol series for Maze.
